Cordovan watch strap: the noblest horse leather

Cordovan is a legendary leather obtained from horsehide. Extremely dense, resistant, and capable of developing an extraordinary patina, it is considered one of the most beautiful leathers in the world.

What is cordovan?

Shell cordovan comes from a fibrous membrane located under the hide of a horse's rump. It is not strictly speaking a leather but a membrane which, once tanned (traditionally vegetable-tanned for a minimum of 6 months), develops a unique dense and shiny surface.

Why cordovan for a watch strap?

  • Patina: cordovan develops a deep, incomparable luster over time
  • Durability: more resistant than calfskin, it almost never cracks
  • Water resistance: better than classic calfskin due to its density
  • Character: each strap is unique, with natural color variations

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is cordovan so expensive?

Production is limited: each horse provides only two small pieces of shell cordovan. Tanning lasts a minimum of 6 months. Leading tanneries (Horween in Chicago, Shinki in Japan) have waiting lists of several months.

How to care for cordovan?

Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing. Use a specific cordovan cream (no standard shoe polish). Cordovan should not be wet but resists humidity better than calfskin.
